Careers That Are Now Obsolete

Did you ever think that the pay phone, typewriter or the singing telegram would ever become obsolete? Well just like these items, certain careers that were red hot decades ago are now considered obsolete. If you work in a field that many feel is obsolete, don’t feel bad because even with these kinds of jobs it is possible to earn a comfortable living. On the other hand, if you feel that you are not advancing professionally because your job is obsolete, then maybe it’s time to pursue the training needed for a new career. Here are a few obsolete careers.

Mail Carriers

Online shopping is a customer’s paradise but it is also a sign that the role of the mail carrier will decline within the next few years if not the next decade. But online shopping is not the only reason that the mail carrier will not be needed as much as in previous decades. Fewer people are sending out items through snail mail these days thanks to email and it’s a case of “Email killed the snail mail star”. Mail carriers still shouldn’t worry because in areas where there is no Internet service, they might be able to keep their jobs.

Meter Readers

Thanks to the kind of technology from utility companies that let staffers view meters through remote devices, there isn’t a huge need for traditional meter readers who check parking areas for violations of meter rules.

Print Journalists

This field is not completely obsolete but it could be within a few years. This is because most people are not subscribing to the print versions as they used to and instead they get most of their news from online sources. As a result, several newspapers had to shut down while other newspapers decided to offer only online subscriptions to customers. The good news is that while this situation caused massive layoffs of print journalists, those journalists can continue their careers by entering the online journalism field.

In conclusion, if you have worked in these careers for years it might be a good idea to look into other careers that are suited to your interests and skills that you currently have and which are transferable to your new career.
