“Leadership is action not position.”
Donald H McGannon
Whilst effective leadership is elaborated by persons’ actions, the reality is it is difficult to be seen as a leader if your job description or post does not clearly state a leadership role. If you are applying for a job that defines a requirement for leadership qualities, and you do not have leadership experience, hope that you will be inquired a query to prove it.
Behavioral Interview Query: Describe a period when you took on an informal leadership post within a team. Why did you take on this post? What did you do?
If you applied for a job outside of your past experience, such one that includes an important leadership/management character, you should already have a reply for this query prepared. Queries testing your leadership are nearly a full guarantee.
The great news here is that if you were invited to the interview, they know that you do not clearly have this experience. So your job is to indicate them, deployed on your job background, a period that you had to take on a leadership character in an unauthorized capacity. These involve situations like:
- Taking a leadership character in a team with no leader.
- Leading certain kind of event.
- Arranging a group of persons experiencing unrest that required guidance.
This sort of experience happens mostly to natural leaders, but sometimes you have to look at past and seek when that story occurred. If you have many stories to select from, discover either the most latest or the most relevant for the character.
