Problems Faced by Working Women in Pakistan

Problems Faced by Working Women

Female workers face various issues in the workplace such as gender based discrimination, domestic restriction, harassment, work and family problems and unequal pay

In the past few years, the role of females in our society has been astonishingly changed. Females can be observed as fighter-jet pilots, educationists, company executives, admin heads, customer services head, banking, HR and telecom sector. Females are making a huge contribution in each region. Males are no longer believed as the mere bread earner of the home. Females of the family are now also economically supporting their family. Though the number of working females is increasing day by day but yet there are certain obstacles that they have to cross to prove themselves essentially beneficial for the job world.

Gender based discrimination:

Working males are normally provided unfair profit in contrast to the working females. In this male dominating society, males are believed more hardworking, wise and better workers than females. This gender discrimination results in increased level of anxiety and job dissatisfaction. It also decreases encouragement to work and devotion towards the job.

Primarily, females are given lesser opportunities for good education which results in the deficiency of knowledge in relation to technological advancement.

Domestic Restrictions:

Previously, females were restricted to their house and their significant role was to look after the household chores. With the passage of time, due to increase in financial pressures on families this traditional restriction has been released. Now in most of the families females are also permitted to get quality education and do paid jobs but under specific conditions restrictions. The maximum percentage of working females can be observed as health workers, educationist, clerks or any other low paid job that are not much given priority by males because of the deficiency of progressive opportunities and low pay-scale. Females are permitted to do such jobs because of the women dominant atmosphere. This thing has restricted the female’s exposure to other present opportunities and bounded their progress in the developmental sector. After all day of work at workplace, no matter how tired they are, they also have to take care the domestic chores.

Harassment at Job place:

Harassment is another significant issue confronted by working females, as they are believed an easy target by the men colleagues. Most of the females in the country Pakistan came out of their house to earn money merely at the time of intensive need, they are much susceptible and co-workers and higher management harass them by passing unsuitable remarks or making fun of them or in very extreme situations, they also harass them sexually and tries to rape them.

In normal situations, females remain silent on such type of acts or neglect them or put up with it in terror of losing their job. They are reluctant to give blames against the culprits. In extreme case, some working women give resignations to get rid of all this because they know that it is of no use to make a complaint against them. Corrupt officers and higher officials do not motivate and support them. Strict laws are there to encourage and support working females but merely if all this gets reported. This is one of the great reasons why families do not permit females to work.

Lower Pay-scale:

The boss should make sure that uniform and even wages should be paid to both males and females on an equal rate of work done. In many offices, workers are not permitted to discuss their salaries due to which no one ever comes to know if they are paid less or not. Bullying, harassment and abusing are eccentric acts but lower and unequal wages is a silent offense, no one makes any complaint and the issue sustains.

Females are paid less because boss has this preset concept that she will quit the work after marriage or after having kids. Females earn low also because they have to select a less challenging job for themselves so they can give more time at house. Parenthood impacts the female’s career adversely in comparison to males.

The agency should provide some family-friendlier policy and also make certain equal wages should be offered to the workers without gender discrimination. To be remain silent on such act means that we are silently encouraging this crime

Married Working Women:

Most of the married females are not permitted to do a job and also, it becomes complicated for them to maintain work and household chores equilibrium due to increased responsibility. Conventionally, males are the bread earners of the house and it is not suitable if females support the family financially or if females earn more than males.

Married working females also face issues at work. It is not possible for them to work in late hours. Most of the offices do not have nurseries or daycare where mothers can keep their kids.

Negative behaviors of male colleagues:

Attitude of male colleagues is sometimes very embarrassing and biased. It is believed that females are hired just to add color to the office atmosphere. Deficiency of workplace social support, from co-workers and leaders leads to absenteeism, less turnover and job dissatisfaction. The higher officials should try to develop a supportive and conducive work atmosphere.

Transport:

The transport network in our country is very worse. This is a big hurdle for the females who have to go out for a job. Males and females both have to face this issue. Despite the inadequate presence of the public transport, females also have to face harassment. They are restricted and bound to travel on buses and vans because taxis are very costly.

The government should deal this issue on priority basis. Separate public transport can solve this problem.

What they require to do?

To face issues victoriously, females need to be self-confident and should keep themselves up to date with the recent happenings in the globe of technology. The internet has now solved the issue of restricted opportunities, as every internet savvy individual can access to the globe of knowledge and data. So females should keep surfing the internet to increase their information. Great communication quality is also a necessity; it assists in establishing social network which in turn aids in appraising whenever there are latest opportunities present. Meeting target time is also significant to prove yourself professional and worthy. Another most key thing is to maintain balance and equilibrium in work and personal life.

Also there is a requirement to educate males and tell them to respect other females like they respect females in their family. They should demonstrate flexibility in their behavior and should admit that females can perform even better than them.
