In recent days, we came across an article at Career Builder over the interesting things candidates do to get noticed. We have highlighted time and time again that most hiring managers get as many as one thousand resumes, making it difficult to get noticed no matter how great your qualifications. Few candidates have decided to take matters into their own hands, by establishing out of box strategies to get noticed by interviewers. It is an interesting concept, but is it one you should consider?

Probably Not

Workers that are capable to effectively think out of box are believed to be prized workers. Organizations like Microsoft provide logic puzzles designed particularly to see if the applicant has that ability. Yet as impressive as it is to be capable to think out of box, you probably should not use it during your job search.

Unsuitable Behavior

Most out of box strategies for getting noticed are believed to be profoundly inappropriate and unprofessional. Sending someone a gift to get them to observe your resume is a symbol of desperation. Doing something immensely unusual will only serve to make the hiring manager uncomfortable. Attempting to contact the employer directly will only make you seem creepy.

Realistically, there are not a lot of out of box ideas that are going to be effective, and most – by all expert standards – are unsuitable. Sending a shoe to “get your foot in the door” is cute, but if the business has any rules about accepting gifts, you might be putting the worker at risk for getting fired all because you need to get the job, and now they are left with a shoe they can’t use.

When is it Acceptable?

The mere time you should consider one of these out of box tactics is when it is something related to the job. Like it claims in the article:

“Whatever tactic you select to use, make certain it is relevant to the position you are applying for,” Masiewich claims. “If you select a tactic that you consider will grab a hiring manager’s attention but does not tie into the job, the industry, or what you are about, then it can come off as merely seeming strange and weird instead of creative and clever.”

In general, there are very some unusual and out of box tactics that are going to be relevant to most jobs. Only sales come to mind, and possibly marketing. Beyond those two, outside the box tactics just serve to make you seem like an unusual person, and that can be a risky label to have assigned to you. Except in rare cases, ignore these out of the box tactics.
