Do’s and Don’ts of Professional Attire

Do's and Don'ts of Professional Attire

The way you dress can make or break your career and it’s important to know what constitutes professional attire. One popular fashion trend in the workplace is business casual and here are tips on pulling off the look. Avoid provocative and flashy outfits for the workplace and open-toe shoes are also not allowed for business casual dress. Instead of jeans, you should stick to neutral colored casual pants and the pants should neatly ironed with minimal wrinkles. Polo shirts would work for this kind of attire. Here are additional tips on professional dress.

Suits, Please

In a more formal business setting, men should wear a high quality suit with a conservative colored tie that has very few patterns. Make sure that the suit that you buy fits you perfectly and if it doesn’t, you can have a tailor make alterations to it. The best colors for a men’s business suit include gray, black, navy blue and beige. To complement the suit you can wear wingtip shoes or Oxford shoes.

Keep the Accessories to a Minimum

When you wear professional attire, you want to stay away from jewelry that has too much sparkle or that contains bold colors. Some good options include pearl earrings, small studs, medium sized hoop earrings and thin necklaces with small pendants.

Pair the Neutrals with Pastel Colors

Wearing neutrals don’t have to be boring because you can pair neutrals with pastel colors. A black blazer with yellow shirt could be worn with black pumps or flats along with a yellow purse. Or you can wear a pastel blue shirt with gray trousers along with an off white blazer. When sporting this look it would be a good idea to stick with black or navy blue dress shoes.

No Wild and Crazy Hairstyles

In professional attire, you need to tone down your hair if you generally wear bold and wild hairstyles. You would need to change your hair color if necessary and ask your hairdresser if she can suggest a low maintenance but still beautiful style.

Wearing the right clothes to work helps you get taken seriously by colleagues, clients and your boss. These clothes don’t have to be expensive because there are clothing stores that offer budget clothing that look great without breaking the bank. In some cases you can look for new ways to wear the outfits you already have in the closet.
