If you don’t have NOTES, you’ll forget things. Decide what is essential to learn about the person for the position, and prepare questions to probe them.

Plan the interview environment:
privacy, where no one else can hear their answers
no interruptions, turn off your cell phone, hold all calls
ensure the interviewee is looked after while they wait
Get the TRUE answers, by putting the interviewee at ease – it’s stressful for them, don’t make it worse
High pressure rarely exposes hidden issues – calm, relaxed, gentle, clever questions do

Focus on the Interview:

Clear your desk, apart from what you need for the interview, so it shows you’ve prepared and are organized. This shows respect for the interviewee.

Seating can be threatening or friendly:
Arrange the seating in an informal relaxed way. Don’t sit behind a desk directly facing the interviewee – sit around a coffee table or meeting room table.

The Interview:
Explain clearly and concisely the general details of the organization
Explain in detail the position that is available
Ask open-ended questions – how, why, tell me, what, (and to a lesser extent where, when, which) to get the interviewee talking
Make sure the interviewee does 90% of the talking
Discover the REASONS for their answers, to find out real motives / feelings

Probe the resume:
Clarify any unclear points
Ask about breaks in the time line

Use Testing:

If possible use some form of testing, either of skills or psychological, and have the results quickly available so you can discuss them. Position the test as a helpful discussion point, not the deciding factor.
